Standard versions of today s operating systems, filesystems, and applications do not support multiple systems writing to them at the same time2 The inevitable result is data corruption and application confusion (which results in system or application crashes) When a cluster is working properly, all of the member systems are in sync and know the state of all the others When split brain occurs, the hosts (brains) get out of sync and begin acting separately Our advice is that while you should be concerned about selecting FMS that will detect and do its best to prevent split brain, you may not be able to absolutely guarantee that it will never occur Detecting split brain and forcing a proper recovery is a very difficult problem that not all FMS packages can solve at all, much less solve well.
