When a test fails, does it hang, or does it timeout quickly and report the failure to its application If it hangs, or causes new problems, then the test is unacceptable. Tests must be totally unobtrusive, atomic, and hang-proof. What if the timeout value is set too low, and the test times out before the application has a chance to respond to the query On the other hand, if the timeout value is set too high, unnecessary delays will be added to the identification of and recovery from a serious problem. How often do you run the test Running it too often can put an extraneous and unwelcome load on the systems and networks being tested. But running the test too infrequently could result in a failure going undetected for an extended period. Some applications simply do not invite easy and nonintrusive testing. For those applications, process table examination may be required as a last resort. Otherwise, it may be necessary to monitor a process that is dependent upon the one that cannot be monitored. What happens if the test itself is broken How do you determine that What monitors the monitor And what if the monitor s monitor fails What monitors the monitor s monitor And what if that fails The best solution is to have two monitors on each node in the cluster; among the duties of each monitor is to watch the other monitor. If the first monitor sees that the second monitor has stopped, it must start a new second monitor. At the same time, one of the two monitors is responsible for communicating with other cluster members. Implemented properly, this is a reliable model. (Note that we are specifically not advocating triple redundancy. That is a waste of time and energy.)

restarts that could be carried out to transmit the information; problems of environment encountered, such as: lack of disk space for creating a file, the absence of a queue or its saturation; etc. In case of serious incidents, these tools should of course post the alerts that allow operations staff to intervene to correct the problem and relaunch interrupted operations. To do this requires a global supervision system that will centralize the complete set of supervision information and events, and provide a graphical interface where operators can consult tracking information and perform interventions. This interface will present dashboards that allow a geographical visualization of the transport infrastructure and of the exchanged dataflows (Figure 3.13), as well as indicators that allow global activity (Figure 3.14) to be assessed.

Once your test has found what it believes to be a problem, then what happens First, the test must be rerun. If the first failure is a fluke, it is certainly better to know that and not to overreact than it is to act hastily upon failure detection and affect services that were, in fact, functioning normally. Let s assume that the failure detection is genuine; that a key component has actually failed. The next hurdle to clear is to decide upon the appropriate action to take. The correct action will vary based on your environment, on which component has failed, and on the way your system is configured. (Of course, with an automated FMS, these decisions have been made long before the failure occurs. They are usually made at installation and configuration time.) For example, if the failure is in an application, the choices are to do the following:

Ignore the failure, and allow the system to continue running without the failed application. Send notifications out to key people via appropriate methods (email, pager, etc.), so that the right people can take the right manual action. Attempt to automatically restart the application a predetermined number of times, and if the application cannot be restarted, then:

DIRECTED EVOLUTION OF GALACTOSE OXIDASE Galactose oxidase (EC 1.1.3.9, GAO) from the fungus Fusarium sp. was used as a starting gene for directed evolution. The GAO has a molecular weight of 68 kDa, and is a monomeric glycoprotein with 1.7% carbohydrate, formed by 639 amino acid residues. It catalyzes the following reaction: 1 alcohol O2 H2 O2 aldehyde ! 8:2

Ignore the failure. Send notifications. Initiate a failover. Reboot the server. Halt the server (secondary server will take over). Initiate a failover to the secondary server without attempting any restarts.

For most applications, the most reasonable choice is to attempt to restart the application on the same system, and after a given number of failed attempts, initiate a failover. While failovers are a fine way to recover from one of many different kinds of failures, failovers are, in and of themselves, not desirable. If the application can be safely restarted in place, without requiring the work (and intrinsic complexity and risk) of a full failover, higher levels of availability can be achieved. The application may be able to be started on the same node faster than if it were failed over to another node. Of course, not all applications fit the mold. Some database applications fare better if a database administrator is given the chance to examine the cause of the failure, and to repair it and any ancillary damage before the database is restarted.
